It is important now, more that ever, to remain alert while driving.
If we don’t remember to remain alert, and practice good defensive driving, accidents and collisions will happen. The practice of defensive driving is driving in a manner that will reduce the risk of collision by anticipating dangerous situations, despite adverse conditions or the mistakes of others. Here are some things we can all do, all the time, to achieve these goals.
Don’t talk on your cell phone while driving: In many states, using non-hands-free device while driving is illegal.
Distracted driving
Remember to keep focused on driving. If your GPS, your phone conversation, or radio traffic distracts you, just pull over and don’t start driving again until you can give 100% to driving again. Similarly, if you are driving and you drop something into a foot well or behind your seat, don’t try and retrieve it while moving.
Following too close
I’ve been saying for years, “Distance = time.” The California DMV advises using the “3 Second Rule.” Count to 3 using a stationary object to determine the “space cushion” between you and the car in front of you. More time means more opportunity to avoid a bad situation.
Fatigue
If you work tired, your reaction times will be slowed. Don’t be afraid to pull over, get out of the car and walk around a bit to get the blood flowing.
Medication
During the winter flu season, make sure that you know the details about any medication (prescription or non-prescription) you take. If it’s going to make you drowsy, or advises against operating a vehicle or machinery, don’t drive. And remember, any employee involved in an on duty collision is subject to a drug test.
Defensive driving is important and easy to practice. If you are paying attention to the things around you, avoiding danger and collisions is much easier. Remember the goals of defensive driving and always drive in a manner that will reduce the risk of collision by anticipating dangerous situations, despite adverse conditions or the mistakes of others.
